Revolutionizing Digital Color Separations for Screen Printers
Inkjet printers are revolutionizing the production of wide format color separations for screen and flexo printing. As the pioneer in this field, Wasatch is pleased to announce a new and more powerful software package created especially for the needs of Screen Printers: Wasatch SoftRIP SP
The image on the top left shows what happens when conventional halftoning methods are used to make separations on inkjet printers. But SoftRIP SP's exclusive supercell technique is designed to produce smooth gradations such as shown on the top right.
Unlike the limited "extra gray" features in other RIP products (which affect nothing but gray blends) SoftRIP SP's Extra Tonal Resolution feature reduces tonal banding in all graphics and images, in all color spaces, as illustrated on top
Extra Tonal Resolution from Inkjet Separations
Resolutions that we consider high in the inkjet business are rather low when compared to 2000 and 4000 dpi imagesetters. When using one of these lower dpi (400, 600, or 720 dpi) devices to make color separations, a common problem is the limitation of tonal resolution or available grays. With conventional PostScript halftoning methods, your films will be limited by a well-known formula: maximum grays = (dpi / lpi) squared. The problem that can result from this limitation is illustrated by the "Problem" gradient shown above in the left column.
Wasatch SoftRIP SP now includes a specialized supercell technique designed to remove this limitation, producing smooth gradations at higher lpi's. This is illustrated by the "Solution" gradient on the right.
Wasatch Precision Rosette Screens
Do you really need them? Here's how to tell.
Wasatch Precision Rosette Screens have revolutionized the production of high-end process color separations using standard inkjet printers instead of expensive image-setters. These moire-free sets of halftone screens produce perfect center-filled rosettes using the full printing width available on wide format digital printers. As important as this capability is for high-end process color printing, not everybody needs it. For example, it isn't really needed at all for spot color. Even for process color, some "lower end" printing may not be sensitive to the moire problems that these screens solve.
Here's a way to judge whether you need Wasatch Precision Rosette Screens, or whether your needs can be met with the PostScript screens included with the basic Wasatch SoftRIP package.
CMK Rosette Failed CMK Rosette
The "Failed CMK Rosette" above illustrates the problem that arises when process separations are slightly out of register. This problem nearly always arises with digital halftones of less quality than Wasatch Precision Rosette Screens.
One way to test is by making separation films of a test image that really shows the problem. A good choice is an image that prints a large area of a solid light gray using all four inks. We commonly use a test pattern consisting of a 10X10 inch square with 15% each of C, M, Y, and K.
The question of whether you need Wasatch Precision Rosette Screens is simply the question of whether you care about this moire.
